Reasons to go and fight: He had served in the British Army prior to emigrating to Australia.
Details of service in war: He served with the NSW Citizens' Bushmen, from April 1900 in Rhodesia, west Transvaal including defence of Elands River Post (4-16 August 1900). At Elands he suffered facial wounds and lost teeth, he was invalided to Australia 13 December 1900, wounded. He returned to South Africa and joined the Prince of Wales Light Horse. The Prince of Wales' Light Horse was a unit of the South Afrcan Military, it was engaged near Colesberg about 12 February 1901. On this date the Boers attacked an empty convoy returning Bloemfontein. The escort held its own, and being reinforced by a detachment of the Prince of Wales' Light Horse, drove off the enemy. The despatch of 8 July 1901 shows the Prince of Wales's Light Horse to have been 500 strong shortly before that date. The corps was afterwards taken to Cape Colony, where they had a good deal of skirmishing, and on 14 November 1901 suffered casualties near Brande Kraal and Vogelfontein.
