Service and life after the Boer War: Returned to Albany Western Australia on the 30 July 1902 on the transport Drayton Grange. By 1916 he was married to Ellen, working as a Shoeing Smith and living in Boulder, Western Australia. Joined the AIF on 12 April 1916 as a sapper to serve in the 2^nd Tunnelling Company, Australian Engineers. He served in France, and appointed lance corporal on 3 December 1916. Was wounded in action (gassed) on 13 March 1918. Does appear to have reverted to the rank of sapper at the time of discharge.
