Personal Characteristics: My grandfather was very disciplined and had strong moral values. Height 175 cm, weight 76 kg, of dark complexion, 'yellowish' eyes and brown hair.
Reasons to go and fight: He believed it was his duty. His father was a regular in the British Army, 60th Kings Royal Rifles.
Details of service in war: June 1900 - June 1901 with 1 TIB in Free State and northern Transvaal including ambush at Zwartkloof (1 September 1900) and at battle of Rhenoster Kop (29 November 1900), in great De Wet hunt, in advance on Pietersburg including ambush outside the town where one killed (8 April 1901), and in advance into east Transvaal. March - May 1902 with 1 ACH on Natal border and west Transvaal
Service and life after the Boer War: Did not marry before 1914, worked as an engine driver. Joined the AIF 27 August 1914 as a sapper in the engineers. Served at Anzac Cove, Gallipoli and in France with the 3rd Co Field Engineers, then the 1st Pioneer Battalion. Promoted corporal 16 Sep 1914, sergeant 1 July 1915, commissioned 12 Mar 1916, promoted lieutenant 14 June 1916. Was wounded in action, France 24 July 1916. Discharged 1st May 1919. Returned to farming(?) in Tasmania.
