Details of service in war: The inception of the ILH took place at Pietermaritzburg in September 1899 it comprised Utilanders including Australians. They first served at Elandslaagte in Natal, which was fought on 21 October 1899. Service was then in the Transvaal, Bechuanaland including the relief of Mafikeng, Transvaal and the Orange Free State until the peace was negotiated in 1902.

Service and life after the Boer War: After the war he moved to Rhodesia, and was working on the Gold mines. He met and Married Florence Bain in Bulawayo and they had 5 children. William passed away whilst working on the Champion Mine just outside Gwanda. He was at that time assistant Mine Manager
